Wisdom Tooth Assessment & Extraction
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Enquire About Wisdom Tooth ExtractionWisdom tooth extraction may be considered when a wisdom tooth causes recurring pain, swelling, infection or problems with nearby teeth. At BestSmile Dental Clinic in Bayan Lepas, Penang, we assess the tooth, surrounding gums and neighbouring structures before discussing whether removal or continued monitoring is appropriate.
What Wisdom Tooth Extraction Helps With
Wisdom teeth can become impacted, grow at an angle or only partially emerge through the gums. This can make the area difficult to clean and may contribute to recurring inflammation, food trapping, decay or discomfort.
An impacted wisdom tooth does not automatically need extraction. We assess its position, symptoms and surrounding structures so the treatment decision is based on your individual clinical findings.
When You May Need a Wisdom Tooth Assessment
Consider having your wisdom tooth assessed if you experience:
-
Recurring pain or tenderness at the back of your mouth
-
Swelling, inflammation or repeated infection around a partially erupted tooth
-
Food frequently becoming trapped around the tooth and gums
-
Difficulty keeping the area clean
-
Decay involving the wisdom tooth
-
An impacted or angled tooth affecting a neighbouring tooth
How We Assess Your Wisdom Teeth
-
Dental examination
We examine the wisdom tooth, surrounding gums and nearby teeth and discuss symptoms such as pain, swelling or infection.
-
Dental imaging when required
X-rays can help us evaluate the tooth's position, direction and relationship with neighbouring structures.
-
Further imaging for selected cases
CBCT may be used when additional three-dimensional information is clinically useful for treatment planning.
-
Treatment planning
Based on the findings, we discuss whether extraction, further assessment or continued monitoring may be appropriate.
What to Expect During and After Extraction
The procedure depends on the position of the wisdom tooth. A fully erupted tooth may be removed differently from one that is partially or completely impacted beneath the gum or bone. Wisdom tooth extraction is generally performed under local anaesthesia, with the specific procedure planned according to the individual case.
After removal, we provide instructions for caring for the extraction site, including guidance on eating and oral hygiene. Some swelling, tenderness or discomfort can occur, particularly following surgical extraction, and recovery varies between patients.

Have Your Wisdom Tooth Assessed
If you have recurring discomfort, swelling, food trapping or other concerns around a wisdom tooth, an assessment can help determine its condition and whether treatment or monitoring may be appropriate.
