Fillings

Restorative Dentistry

Dental fillings are restorative treatments used to repair teeth affected by cavities, tooth decay or certain types of minor damage. At BestSmile Dental Clinic in Bayan Lepas, Penang, our dentists assess the affected tooth to determine whether a filling or another restorative treatment may be appropriate.

Restoring Teeth Affected by Decay or Minor Damage

  • Repairs affected tooth structure — Fillings may be used for cavities, decay and certain types of minor damage.
  • Restores tooth shape and function — The affected area is prepared and rebuilt with an appropriate filling material.
  • Different materials available — Confirmed options include composite resin, glass ionomer and other tooth-coloured materials.
  • Treatment based on assessment — The extent of damage and remaining tooth structure help determine the appropriate restoration.

What Dental Fillings Can Help With

A dental filling restores an area of a tooth affected by decay or minor structural damage. It may be considered for cavities, certain chipped teeth, minor damage, or areas affected by wear or trauma where a filling is appropriate.

Having one of these concerns does not automatically mean you need a filling. Your dentist first needs to assess the extent of the problem and determine whether enough suitable tooth structure remains for a filling or whether another restorative approach should be considered.

What Happens During a Dental Filling?

Tooth Assessment

Our dentist examines the affected tooth and determines the extent of decay or damage.

Removal and Preparation

Decayed or damaged tooth structure is removed as required, and the area is cleaned and prepared.

Filling Placement

An appropriate filling material is placed to rebuild the affected area.

Restoration

Treatment is completed to restore the affected part of the tooth's shape and function.

The filling material used depends on the individual tooth and treatment requirements.

What Filling Materials Are Available?

At BestSmile Dental Clinic, our filling materials include composite resin, glass ionomer and other tooth-coloured materials where appropriate.

Composite resin is a tooth-coloured restorative material. Glass ionomer provides another filling option. Rather than assuming one material is appropriate for every tooth, your dentist can select the restoration according to the individual treatment requirements.

Dental Fillings vs Aesthetic Fillings

Both treatments restore affected teeth, and there can be some overlap because composite resin may be used as a filling material.

Dental Fillings

General Dental Fillings focus on repairing cavities or minor tooth damage and restoring shape and function using an appropriate material.

Aesthetic Fillings

Aesthetic Fillings specifically use tooth-coloured composite resin with greater consideration given to helping the restoration blend with surrounding teeth.

When Might a Filling Not Be Enough?

More extensive tooth damage may require a different restorative approach. Depending on the condition of the tooth, BestSmile's available treatments also include Inlays, Onlays, Overlays and Dental Crowns. Root Canal Treatment may also be relevant to the condition of the tooth.

An assessment therefore comes before deciding that a damaged tooth simply needs a filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

A filling may be appropriate for certain minor chips or structural damage. More extensive damage may require another restorative treatment, so the affected tooth should first be assessed.
A cavity or suspected tooth decay should be professionally assessed. The appropriate treatment depends on the condition and extent of the affected area rather than assuming every case requires the same restoration.
If a filling is not appropriate, your dentist may discuss another treatment such as an Inlay, Onlay, Overlay or Dental Crown. Root Canal Treatment may also be relevant depending on the condition of the tooth.
