Scaling and Polishing

Scaling and Polishing

Arrange a Dental Appointment

Scaling and Polishing is a professional dental cleaning treatment that removes plaque, hardened tartar (calculus) and surface stains from the teeth. At BestSmile Dental Clinic in Bayan Lepas, Penang, we provide Scaling and Polishing alongside routine Dental Check-Ups where appropriate as part of an individual preventive dental-care plan.

  • Removes plaque and tartar — Scaling professionally removes deposits from tooth surfaces.
  • Helps remove surface stains — Polishing smooths cleaned tooth surfaces and addresses certain surface staining.
  • Supports routine oral hygiene — Professional cleaning complements regular brushing and daily oral care.
  • Connects with wider gum care — Our assessment helps determine whether routine cleaning or additional periodontal treatment may be appropriate.

What Scaling and Polishing Helps With

Plaque can accumulate on tooth surfaces, while hardened deposits such as tartar cannot always be adequately managed through routine brushing alone. We use appropriate dental instruments, including ultrasonic or hand instruments depending on the treatment being performed, to remove these deposits.

Polishing follows the scaling process. It helps smooth the cleaned tooth surfaces and remove surface stains, leaving the teeth feeling cleaner and smoother.

What Happens During Scaling and Polishing?

Dental assessment

We assess the condition of your teeth and gums. Scaling and Polishing may be performed alongside a routine Dental Check-Up.

Scaling

We remove plaque and hardened tartar from tooth surfaces using ultrasonic or hand instruments. Cleaning may include areas around and below the gum line where appropriate.

Polishing

We polish the tooth surfaces after scaling to help remove surface stains and provide a smooth, clean finish.

Ongoing preventive care

We encourage appropriate brushing, oral hygiene and ongoing dental visits between professional cleanings.

Scaling and Polishing vs Deep Cleaning

Routine Scaling and Polishing and periodontal Deep Cleaning serve different purposes.

Treatment General Purpose
Scaling and Polishing Removes plaque, tartar and surface stains as part of general and preventive dental care
Deep Cleaning / Scaling and Root Planing Periodontal treatment for appropriate gum conditions
Periodontal Maintenance Ongoing periodontal care and monitoring where required

If our assessment identifies periodontal concerns, routine Scaling and Polishing may not be sufficient. At BestSmile Dental Clinic, we also provide Gum Disease Treatment, Deep Cleaning, Scaling and Root Planing and Periodontal Maintenance, with specialist periodontal support available where relevant.

Is Scaling and Polishing the Same as Teeth Whitening?

No. Polishing can help remove certain surface stains, but Scaling and Polishing primarily focuses on professional dental cleaning.

Professional Teeth Whitening is a separate aesthetic treatment focused on tooth colour. If tooth colour or staining is your main concern, our dentists can assess your teeth and discuss whether another treatment may be appropriate.

Scaling and Polishing as Part of Preventive Dental Care

Professional cleaning works alongside daily oral hygiene and other aspects of preventive care rather than replacing them.

At BestSmile Dental Clinic, we provide Dental Check-Ups, Scaling and Polishing, Preventive Dental Sealants, Dental Fillings and oral-health education as part of our wider dental care. Our team can assess your individual oral-health needs and discuss the appropriate type and frequency of dental care.

Arrange Your Professional Dental Cleaning

If plaque, tartar or surface staining has accumulated on your teeth, our team can assess your teeth and gums and provide Scaling and Polishing where appropriate. We can also discuss whether additional dental or periodontal care may be needed based on your individual condition.
